CULTURE
IN THE STATE OF JOHOR
The people of Johor are composed of various Malays. The
domain is Java tribe so there are still strong or totok. Nonetheless, not all
are derived from the marine family of Java Island. Some of them are religious
educated, preachers and successful farmers. But because of the limited land
area in Java Island then they migrated to the State of Johor. Now, they are the
successful and developed Johor people with plantations. Most of their children
are highly educated and take part in the public service of the state of Johor
and the Federation.
v Origin
of the name of Johor
Before getting the real name as it is now, Johor has been
mentioned and well-known among sailors from Siam, Europe, the Middle East and
the Kingdom around the archipelago with various names before the Malay
Sultanate of the Malay Sultanate again. In the Malay History book written by
Tun Sri Lanang in 1612, Johor was originally known as Javanese as Ganggayu or
Gangga Ayu which means the same as Warawari is a big kingdom upstream of the
Johor River. In Siamese, Johor has been called "Gangganu" and the
Javanese people call Johor as "Galuh". These two words mean "Gemstone".
While Nusantara is famous for its spice business, Arab
traders have also come to do business here. From time to time Arab and Islamic
influences became more and more powerful with the arrival of Arab traders here.
The Arabs call the gem with the "Jauhar"
call. From this Jauhar term, the name of Johor is more known and remained
until now.
Laksa Johor is not like another. Like many other
noodles, made from rice flour, but the noodles used are spaghetti. About the
broth, it is more concentrated than usual using mackerel, machete or mackerel
and is cooked with a thick coconut milk with coconut husks. The Johor laksa
dishes will also be served along with ulam-ulaman
and sambal belacan.
Kacang Pool a simple but filling meal. One piece
of bread and a bowl of peanut sauce cooked with various spices and decorated
with a form of eye and lemon musk that will certainly sting your sensory cells.
To me, the strength of this pool is located on the sauce. If not, before
reaching the Kacang Pool Haji stall, it's a smell in the car. You have to try!
The stalls located at Jalan Tun Razak, Larkin.
Roti Jala has its unique yellow texture will
make you want to add more. But in Johor it is called Roti Kirai. This bread is always eaten with a bowl of curry sauce
just like the Roti Canai just the difference in the form of a roll.
The last one is my favorite! Nasi Ambeng. White rice is mixed with a variety of side dishes, serondeng, noodles and cooked chicken
with soy sauce and long bean sprouts fried with fat. This Nasi Ambeng comes
from Java, at the time of trading in Singapore they were sailing in the Johor
trade and distorted the infectious name of the Nasi Ambeng.
v Traditional
Dance
Kuda Kepang Dance
Kuda Kepang is a traditional game that is especially popular
among the people of Johor, especially those of Java. The claw horse is a woven
statue that is shaped like a horse without legs. It is made of woven bamboo or
animal skins that are designed to be more attractive. Usually a group of stingy
horses has 10 to 15 dancers. One of them acted as the headmaster. In its early
stages, all the dancer's movements are on day-to-day instructions that use rope
to control the game. These dances are usually performed at parties gathering to
enliven the atmosphere as welcoming celebrities, celebrating weddings and
celebrations. One of the interesting things in this dance is that there are
often some dancers going up to syeikh (drunk) after the official show ends.
Those who "go up to this shaykh" can do strange weapon movements that
surely can not be done in a state of illness.
Zapin Dance
In Johor zapin known in two forms namely Zapin Melayu and
Zapin Arab shows the difference in terms of its adaptation element. In reality
both zapin genres come from one Arab society brought by Hadramaut. The
uniqueness of the Malay Zapin tradition lies not only on the unity of the music
and its instruments that are influenced by Arabism as well as on the nature of
the dancers and audience's segret. In this context, the uniqueness of the zapin
dance is particularly evident in the features of its connection with the
Islamic spirit brought by the Arabs. In Johor Zapin Dance has been accepted as
an Islamic art that serves as entertainment either at secular occasions or
during the celebration of great days. One of the interesting things about the
Zapin Johor dance is the ability to create the sense of fraternity of the
dancer and the musicians and the nature of the decorps of decorps that can be
raised among them thus breaking the shame of dancers when dancing in public.
v Wedding
customs
Merisik
It aims to
select and investigate the background of a daughter-in-law regarding her
behavior, religious knowledge, household skills and so on.
Meminang
Also known
as "menghantar tanda". The goal is to express the desire of the
youngest son who wants to marry the girl of his choice. Usually the entourage
will be represented by the male father or parents who will go to the virgin's
house to shave it. If you follow custom, a period will be given to the women so
they can talk to each other or to research the background of the men. If the
proposal is accepted, they will discuss the date of the engagement, delivery
and other matters related to the engagement process. Next, a ring will be
handed over to the female representative as a sign of hosting. In addition,
there are also some other delivery items that have been given such as junjung
sirah, prayer, Quran, makeup and so on. The number of delivery tray is usually
in odd numbers such as 5 to 7 or 7 to 9 where the woman will reply a little
more than the men.
Persandingan
This is the
highlight of the wedding ceremony where the two brides will be called
"RAJA SEHARI". The companionship commenced with the companions'
hoarding and the salutation of greetings from the bridegroom's wedding party to
the bride's house. The entourage will be rewarded with sprinkling of rose water
and sprinkling of turmeric rice
Toll Custom
Toll Custom
was carried out before the ceremony was paired with the pair. The couple
married to Johor women will be charged a series of Tol before they can enter
the bride's house. In this tradition, climbers or escorts for the groom play a
role in 'giving' and 'paying' money to those who take care of toll including
children, relatives, brides and mates. This Toll Custom is not obligatory but
only to enliven the ceremony.
v Conclusion
The importance of customs in the state of Johor can not be
denied. The customs and culture that encompass all aspects of birth, marriage,
dance and food are found in the lives of all societies in Johor. The customs
are the habits of life practiced by the people of Johor who can illustrate the
cultural patterns of the community. The entire way of life of a human being,
whether in the form of thoughts, beliefs, conduct or production in a society
accepted by most members of society and inherited from generation to
generation.
